The Greatest Show of the West

The last surviving Miller brother, Colonel Zack T. Miller seen here on his Arabian stallion, Ben Hur began his show business career in 1909 when he began to direct each performing act during that season. A performer himself, Zack was also a part of the show when he raced Ben Hur around the arena blasting aerial targets. Special short range shot cartridges were used to help insure audience safety but it also increased the ability to break the fragile glass balls. Like the other brothers Zack had an affinity for wide brimmed and tall crowned western hats styled after the Mexican sombrero. The style was soon adopted by others and Tom Mix made it famous as his landmark headgear during his movie career. It become known as the ‘Tom Mix’ style Stetson but its origins were from the 101 Ranch.
